Vastu House Plan: Ideal Room Layout for Every Direction (2026)

A vastu-compliant house plan is not simply about which direction your home faces. It is a precise spatial system that assigns every room, every function, and every element to the zone that best supports it — based on the natural energy fields of the eight directions, the five elements, and the cosmic forces that govern each sector of the Vastu Purusha Mandala.

This guide gives you the complete vastu house plan framework — applicable to all house orientations — using the VIDS™ 16-zone analysis developed by Vardhini Vastu.

The Foundation: Vastu Purusha Mandala

Every vastu house plan is based on the Vastu Purusha Mandala — a cosmic diagram of 81 squares (or 64 in simplified form) that maps energy zones, governing deities, and elemental forces onto the floor plan of any building. The body of the Vastu Purusha lies across this grid, with his head in the north-east and his feet in the south-west.

When rooms are placed correctly within this mandala, each function aligns with the energy that naturally supports it:

  • Sleeping (rest, stability) → South-West (Earth element, heaviness)
  • Cooking (fire, transformation) → South-East (Fire element, Agni)
  • Prayer (divine connection) → North-East (Water element, Jupiter/Ishaan)
  • Wealth, work (abundance) → North (Kuber, wealth energy)
  • Social interaction → East (Indra, vitality and authority)

Universal Vastu Room Placement Guide

The following placements apply to all house orientations. They represent the ideal positions according to classical vastu texts and the VIDS™ system:

Master Bedroom — South-West

The south-west is the Earth element zone, governed by the Pitru (ancestors) energy. It provides maximum stability, groundedness, and authority for the head of the family. The bedroom here promotes deep sleep, strong decision-making, and physical health. Bed position: head pointing south or east. The bed should be placed such that it has a solid wall behind the head and open space in front.

Kitchen — South-East

The south-east is the Agni (fire) zone, governed by the deity Agni. Placing the kitchen here aligns the functional fire of cooking with the cosmic fire energy of the zone. The result is nourishing food, good health for all residents, and harmonious meal preparation. Cooking direction: Always east. The gas stove or cooking range should be positioned so the cook faces east while cooking — never south.

Pooja Room / Mandir — North-East

The north-east (Ishaan) is the most sacred zone in any floor plan, governed by Jupiter and Ishaan (Shiva). The Water element here amplifies prayers, spiritual practices, and divine connection. The idol should face west (worshipper faces east) or face east (worshipper faces west). Never place a toilet or kitchen in the north-east — this is the most serious vastu defect possible.

Living Room — North or East

The north zone (Kuber — wealth energy) and east zone (Indra/Sun — vitality and social energy) are ideal for the living room. These zones naturally attract positive social energy, making the living room a place of welcoming, lively gatherings. Keep north and east walls lighter — avoid heavy furniture, dark curtains, or storage blocking these walls.

Children’s Room — West or North-West

The west zone (Varun — discipline, Saturn energy) supports study, focus, and academic discipline. Children sleeping in the west zone with their head pointing east show consistent improvement in academic performance. The north-west is also acceptable for older children who need exposure to social and communication skills.

Guest Room — North-West

The north-west (Vayu/wind zone) governs movement and transience. Guests placed in north-west rooms naturally feel the energy of movement — they visit purposefully and leave on time. For hospitality businesses or Airbnb hosts, the north-west guest room placement is especially effective.

Study Room / Home Office — North or West

The north zone’s Kuber energy makes it excellent for financial work, business planning, and career-oriented study. The west zone’s Saturn discipline makes it ideal for deep concentration, research, and technical study. Students studying in north-facing desks or west-zone rooms consistently outperform those in other zones.

Bathroom — South, West, or North-West

Toilets are classified as spaces of outgoing energy in vastu. They must be placed in zones that can accommodate this outflow without damaging vital energy fields. The south (Yama — transformation and release), west (Varun — water flow), and north-west (Vayu — outward movement) are all acceptable. Never in the north-east.

Staircase — South, South-West, or West

Staircases represent upward movement and structural weight. They belong in the heavier, denser zones of the south and south-west. The staircase should rise from north to south or east to west — meaning you walk upward towards south or west. Never place a staircase in the north-east — it blocks incoming positive energy at the most sacred zone.

Safe / Locker — South-West or North

The safe or locker should be placed in the south-west zone, opening towards north or east. A safe opening towards north faces Kuber — the wealth deity — which vastu texts associate with financial growth and accumulation. Second best: inside the north zone, opening towards east.

Brahmasthan (Centre of House) — Must Be Open

The exact centre of any floor plan is the Brahmasthan — the seat of Brahma (the creator). This zone must be kept completely open, well-lit, and unobstructed. No pillars, toilets, staircases, or permanent heavy structures should occupy the brahmasthan. In multi-storey buildings, the brahmasthan should ideally have a vertical opening or skylight through all floors.

Vastu House Plan by Direction

Vastu for New Construction vs Existing Homes

New Construction

The best time to apply vastu is during the design phase, before a single wall is built. At this stage, every room can be positioned correctly from the start. A pre-construction VIDS™ consultation covers:

  • Plot orientation analysis and main gate/entrance pada selection
  • Optimal floor plan layout for all rooms
  • Brahmasthan preservation in the structural design
  • Staircase, septic tank, and sump placement
  • Compound wall height proportions (SW highest, NE lowest)
  • Foundation-level energy mapping

Existing Homes

The VIDS™ system is specifically designed for existing homes where structural changes are not possible. Zero-demolition corrections for existing floor plans include:

  • Virtual Gate Opening for incorrectly placed main doors
  • Yantra placements for defective room zones
  • Elemental Strip Technique for fire/water/earth zone corrections
  • Pyramid grid placements for energy defects
  • Colour and décor corrections that shift zone energy without structural changes

The VIDS™ House Plan Analysis Process

The VIDS™ (Vardhini Integrated Direction System) applies a 16-zone division of the compass to your floor plan — twice the precision of standard 8-zone vastu analysis. The process for a house plan consultation:

  1. Floor plan submission — You share your floor plan (photo, PDF, or architectural drawing) with north marked
  2. Degree measurement — Exact facing degree of each wall measured using Lecher Antenna or digital compass
  3. 16-zone mapping — Your floor plan is overlaid with the 16-zone VIDS™ mandala
  4. Defect identification — Every room’s zone placement is evaluated; active and dormant defects identified
  5. Correction protocol — Zero-demolition correction plan prepared for each defect
  6. Implementation guidance — Step-by-step timeline for implementing corrections
  7. Follow-up review — 30-day and 90-day follow-up to assess outcomes

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ideal vastu house plan?

Master bedroom SW, kitchen SE, pooja room NE, living room N or E, children’s rooms W or NW, guest room NW, study N or W, toilets S/W/NW, staircase S/SW/W, brahmasthan open. Main door placement depends on the specific facing direction.

Can vastu be applied to an existing house plan?

Yes. The VIDS™ system achieves 80–90% vastu compliance in existing homes without any structural changes, using yantra, elemental, and energy correction techniques.

Which room should be in which direction as per vastu?

Master bedroom → SW; Kitchen → SE; Pooja → NE; Living → N/E; Children → W/NW; Guest → NW; Study → N/W; Toilet → S/W/NW; Staircase → S/SW/W.

What is the vastu rule for the centre of the house?

The Brahmasthan (centre) must be completely open and unobstructed — no pillars, toilets, or heavy structures. This allows prana to circulate freely through the entire home.
