Degree-accurate directional analysis (VIDS™) for all assessments | Online consultations available
Every Vastu principle is directional. The eight cardinal and inter-cardinal directions — north, north-east, east, south-east, south, south-west, west, and north-west — each carry a distinct elemental energy, a governing deity in classical Vastu cosmology, and a specific influence over different areas of human life. Understanding these directional properties is the foundation of all Vastu analysis.
The 8 Vastu Directions: Elements, Properties & Life Areas
North (Uttara) — Water Element
Element: Water | Deity: Kubera (wealth) | Planet: Mercury
The north governs: financial flow, career advancement, new opportunities, and the influx of positive energy into the home. This is the most critical zone for wealth and professional growth. The north wall should be lighter than the south wall in height and weight. The north zone should be more open than the south zone.
What to place in north zone: Money plant, blue or green colours, career-related objects, a water feature or aquarium, an indoor fountain. Avoid: Toilets, kitchens, heavy storage, staircases, or overhead tanks in the north zone.
North-East (Ishanya) — Space/Akasha Element
Element: Space (Akasha) | Deity: Ishana (Shiva) | Planet: Jupiter
The most sacred and energetically elevated zone in any property. Governs: spiritual growth, divine prana, health, and the family’s future direction. Must be the lightest, most open, and least obstructed zone. Positive energy enters the home through the north-east.
What to place: Pooja room, tulsi plant, copper vessel with water, crystal, morning light (ensure the NE gets maximum morning sunlight). Avoid: Kitchen, toilet, heavy storage, staircase, bedroom, structural pillars.
East (Purva) — Wood/Air Element
Element: Wood/Air | Deity: Indra | Planet: Sun
Governs: health, social relationships, morning vitality, and fame. The east receives the morning sun— the most beneficial solar radiation of the day. The east wall should have more windows and openings than the west wall to receive maximum morning solar energy.
What to place: Living room, study room, main entrance (E3/E4 sub-zone), plants, jasmine. Avoid: Toilets and heavy storage blocking east wall openings.
South-East (Agni) — Fire Element
Element: Fire | Deity: Agni | Planet: Venus
Governs: energy, vitality, financial activation, and transformation. The correct zone for the kitchen — fire in the fire zone is elemental alignment. Also governs the family’s financial activity and wealth creation through effort.
What to place: Kitchen (ideal placement), electrical switchboards, generator, fire-related objects. Avoid: Master bedroom, pooja room, water features, or toilet in the south-east.
South (Dakshina) — Fire/Earth Element
Element: Fire/Earth | Deity: Yama (Dharma) | Planet: Mars
Governs: fame, authority, law, reputation, and the household’s external standing. The south direction carries authority energy and should have more weight and mass than the north. Taller walls, heavier furniture, and less openings on the south wall is the classical prescription.
What to place: Heavy furniture, master bedroom (in some traditions), structural mass. Avoid: Main entrance in defective south sub-zones (S1 and S2).
South-West (Niruta) — Earth Element
Element: Earth | Deity: Niruta | Planet: Rahu
Governs: stability, longevity, marriage, and the household’s long-term foundation. The heaviest, most grounded zone in the property. Structural weight in the south-west reinforces its earth energy. The master bedroom in the south-west is the classical prescription for the eldest couple.
What to place: Master bedroom, heavy structural elements, overhead water tank, safe/valuables storage. Avoid: Water features, swimming pool, north-east-type light and open decor.
West (Paschima) — Metal/Air Element
Element: Metal/Air | Deity: Varuna | Planet: Saturn
Governs: completion, rewards for past effort, creative expression, and children. The west direction supports the culmination of things started — projects, careers, financial cycles. Children’s rooms in the west or north-west zone show positive results in Vastu assessments.
What to place: Children’s bedroom, dining room, guest bathroom. Avoid: Heavy obstructions blocking the western sky view from the main living area (the setting sun has symbolic importance in the west zone).
North-West (Vayavya) — Air Element
Element: Air | Deity: Vayu | Planet: Moon
Governs: movement, travel, change, social relationships, and temporary guests. The north-west is the air zone — it governs everything that moves, flows, and changes. Guest bedrooms in the north-west ensure guests do not overstay. Businesses involving logistics, transport, or frequent client movement benefit from north-west activation.
What to place: Guest bedroom, garage, vehicles, spaces used temporarily. Avoid: Master bedroom (creates relationship instability and frequent separations).
How to Take a Compass Reading for Vastu
- Download a compass app that shows degrees (not just cardinal directions). Popular options: Smart Compass, Compass 360 Pro, or use Google Maps compass mode.
- Stand at the main entrance of your home, facing outward (toward the road or lobby).
- Hold the phone flat (not tilted) and allow the compass to settle.
- Note the degree reading. For example: 12° = approximately north-north-east. 178° = approximately south. 94° = approximately east.
- This degree reading is your entrance direction. Share it with a Vastu consultant who can map it to the precise sub-zone (pada) within that directional wall.
The VIDS™ 16-Zone System vs. Standard 8-Direction Analysis
Standard Vastu analysis uses 8 directions — the 4 cardinal and 4 intercardinal directions. The VIDS™ methodology (Vardhini Integrated Directional System) used at Vardhini Vastu analyses 16 directional zones: the 8 standard directions plus 8 intermediate zones between each standard direction.
This provides double the resolution of standard analysis. Many defects — particularly at the boundaries between zones (e.g., the exact boundary between the north and north-east) — are only detectable at 16-zone resolution. The 45-degree resolution of standard analysis misses these boundary defects entirely.
The compass reading for a VIDS™ assessment is accurate to 1 degree — not rounded to the nearest cardinal direction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which is the most important direction in Vastu?
The north-east (Ishanya) is considered the most important zone in Vastu — it is the primary channel for incoming positive energy and governs health, spiritual prana, and the family’s future. The main entrance direction is the second most important Vastu parameter for any property.
How do I find north in my house for Vastu?
Use a compass app on your phone (set it to show degrees). Stand in the centre of your floor plan and identify the direction that shows 0° (true north) or close to it. Mark this on your floor plan. All other zones are mapped from this north reference point.
Can Vastu directions be different from magnetic north?
Vastu Shastra uses magnetic north (the direction a compass points) as its reference, not true geographic north. Magnetic declination (the difference between magnetic and geographic north) in Bangalore is approximately 0.5° west — negligible for Vastu analysis purposes. The compass reading taken at the property is used directly.
What is the best direction for a house in Vastu?
There is no single best direction for a house — it depends on the occupants’ life goals, the specific sub-zone the entrance falls in, and the property’s layout. North-facing (N3/N4 sub-zone) and east-facing (E3/E4) are generally most auspicious for wealth and health respectively. A VIDS™ assessment determines the auspiciousness of any specific property’s directional configuration.
