The money plant (Epipremnum aureum) is the most widely used Vastu plant in Indian homes — and the most widely misplaced. Direction decides whether it supports the wealth zone or quietly clashes with it. Here are the placement rules as per Vastu Shastra.
Best Direction for a Money Plant
The south-east of the living room or hall is the classical position, because the south-east is governed by Venus (Shukra), the planet of wealth and material comfort. The green, fast-growing vine in this zone symbolically feeds growth of income. The north zone — ruled by Kubera, lord of wealth — is the second-best position, especially for people seeking new income opportunities.
Directions to Avoid
- North-east — the water-dominated zone of clarity and wisdom; a heavy climber here is said to obstruct rather than help.
- East-west axis on walls with sharp sunlight — the plant dries and a withering money plant is worse than none.
- Never let the vine trail on the floor — train it upward on a support; a downward-growing money plant symbolises declining finances.
Money Plant in the Bedroom
A money plant in the bedroom is acceptable as per Vastu if kept in the south-east corner of the room and never near the bed’s headboard. Keep it in a green or brown pot, not white or blue, and remove dry leaves promptly — dying foliage in a bedroom is a strong negative signal in Vastu.
Money Plant in the Kitchen
Avoid keeping a money plant in the kitchen if the kitchen sits in the south-east — the fire zone should not be loaded with the water-heavy energy of a plant growing in a water bottle. In kitchens located elsewhere, a small money plant on a window sill away from the stove is fine.
Water or Soil? Pot Rules
- Both are acceptable; if grown in water, change the water every week.
- Green, brown and terracotta pots support the plant’s earth-growth symbolism.
- Avoid thorny plants beside a money plant — the combination is considered conflicting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I keep a money plant at home as per Vastu?
The south-east corner of the living room is the ideal position, ruled by Venus, the planet of prosperity. The north zone is the next best choice as the direction of Kubera, the lord of wealth.
Is it OK to keep a money plant in the bedroom?
Yes, in the south-east corner of the bedroom, away from the headboard, in a green or brown pot. Remove dry or yellowing leaves immediately.
Can a money plant be kept outside the main door?
A healthy climbing money plant beside (not blocking) the entrance is acceptable, but the main entrance zone rules depend on the door’s direction — check our main door Vastu guide or consult us for your specific entrance.
Why is my money plant not bringing results?
A money plant is a supportive remedy, not a primary correction. If the wealth zones of the home (north and south-east) carry defects like toilets, cuts or clutter, fix the zone first — a plant cannot compensate for a structural zone imbalance.
