Plants in Vastu Shastra are living elemental amplifiers. Each plant carries a specific energetic quality — based on its growth pattern, leaf shape, colour, moisture content, and bio-electromagnetic field — that either supports or conflicts with the directional zone it is placed in. This is not aesthetic advice. It is elemental prescription.

This guide covers which plants to place in which zones, which plants are inauspicious indoors, and the rules for the most commonly asked-about plants: tulsi, money plant, bamboo, and cactus.

Auspicious Vastu Plants and Their Correct Zones

Tulsi (Holy Basil) — North-East, East, or Balcony

Tulsi is the most powerful indoor plant in the Vastu plant system. It purifies air, generates prana, carries the water element in a form compatible with the sacred north-east zone, and is mentioned in classical Vastu texts as an activator of the Ishanya (north-east) energy. Placement:

  • Ideal: North-east corner of the home, east-facing balcony, or east-facing window
  • Acceptable: North-facing garden area
  • Avoid: South or south-east zone (fire conflict), indoors in a room with no natural light

Tulsi should not be placed in the kitchen or bedroom. It belongs in open, naturally lit spaces. A dying tulsi is a significant Vastu signal — it often indicates north-east zone energy depletion and should be composted and immediately replaced.

Money Plant — North or North-East

Money plant (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the most searched Vastu plants. Classical Vastu tradition recommends placing money plant in the north direction — the zone that governs financial flow, career, and new opportunities. The north activates cash flow; the money plant amplifies and sustains this activation.

  • Ideal: North wall or north corner, ideally in a glass bottle with water rather than soil (water medium is more compatible with the north water element)
  • Acceptable: North-east corner
  • Avoid: South-east (fire conflict suppresses wealth activation), bedroom

The money plant should not be allowed to trail on the ground. Upward growth (on a trellis or staked upward) is prescribed in Vastu; downward trailing represents declining energy.

Lucky Bamboo — East or North

Lucky bamboo (Dracaena sanderiana) is associated with the wood element, growth, and upward movement. The east direction — which governs health and social relationships — is the ideal placement zone. North placement supports career growth.

  • Ideal: East zone, east-facing shelf or window
  • Acceptable: North zone
  • Avoid: South or south-east (fire conflicts with the wood/water element of bamboo), bedroom

Number of bamboo stalks matters in Vastu numerology: 3 stalks (happiness, long life, wealth), 5 stalks (health), 7 stalks (good health and luck), 21 stalks (overall good fortune). Avoid 4 stalks (associated with death in Chinese tradition, which has overlapping influence on the lucky bamboo tradition).

Ashoka Tree or Ashoka Plant — East Zone or Garden

Ashoka (Saraca asoca) is one of the most auspicious trees in Vastu Shastra. It promotes happiness, removes sorrow, and brings positive energy when planted in the east zone of the garden. For apartments without garden space, a small ashoka plant on the east balcony achieves partial effect.

Jasmine — East or North Zone, Bedroom Window

Jasmine is one of the few flowering plants with an explicitly positive Vastu prescription for the bedroom. Its fragrance improves sleep quality, reduces anxiety, and is particularly beneficial in the bedroom when placed on the east or north window. Jasmine should not be placed in the south-east (fire zone conflict).

Banana Plant — North-East Garden or East Side of Plot

Banana plants are considered highly auspicious in Vastu. They are associated with Jupiter energy and are planted near the north-east or east side of the plot in traditional construction. For flats and apartments, a small banana plant on the north-east or east balcony carries this energy in miniature.

Neem Tree — West or North-West of Plot

Neem is a powerful air-purifier and energy-cleanser. In Vastu, neem is placed in the west or north-west of the garden. Neem in the north-east or east blocks the morning sun and reduces the beneficial solar energy entering the home from the east.

Plants to Avoid Indoors as Per Vastu

Cactus and Thorny Plants

Any plant with thorns or sharp projections is considered inauspicious indoors in Vastu. Thorns represent cutting energy that disrupts the flow of prana in the home. Cactus, rose plants with thorns exposed, and similar thorny species should be kept in the garden area (south or west side), not inside the home or on balconies facing the home’s primary rooms.

An exception: rose plants with flowers actively blooming are considered acceptable in the east or north balcony. The flower energy overrides the thorn energy when the plant is in active bloom.

Bonsai Trees

Bonsai represent stunted growth — a living entity deliberately restricted from its full expression. This energetic principle is considered inauspicious in Vastu for indoor placement in the home’s main living zones. Bonsai can be placed in outdoor garden spaces as decorative elements, but should not be in the living room, bedroom, or any primary zone.

Milky-Sap Plants

Plants that produce milky or sticky sap when cut — including certain varieties of ficus, euphorbia, and similar species — are considered to carry a heavy, tamasic (inert) energy in Vastu that suppresses prana flow in the zone they occupy. Avoid placing these indoors in primary living zones.

Dried Plants and Dead Flowers

Any plant that has died or dried out should be immediately removed from the home. Dead plants carry nega-prana (depleted life force) that drains the energy of the zone they occupy. This is one of the simplest and most impactful Vastu corrections: keeping only live, thriving plants in every zone where plants are placed.

Indoor Plants by Room: Quick Reference

Living Room (North or North-West zone): Money plant on north wall, lucky bamboo in north corner, jasmine near north-east window. Avoid large leafy plants in the south-east corner of the living room.

Bedroom: Jasmine on east or north window (promotes sleep). Lavender (not strictly classical Vastu but supports sleep quality). Avoid money plant, tulsi, or large plants in the bedroom.

Kitchen: Tulsi near the kitchen entrance (not inside the cooking zone). Avoid large leafy plants inside the kitchen.

Study/Home Office: Lucky bamboo on the east wall of the study promotes focus and intellectual growth. A small money plant in the north corner of the study promotes career opportunities.

Balcony (East-facing): Tulsi, jasmine, banana plant, or ashoka plant. The east balcony is the most auspicious placement zone for plants in an apartment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is money plant good for home as per Vastu?

Yes, money plant is auspicious when placed in the north direction. In the north zone, it activates cash flow and financial opportunities. In the south-east zone, it creates a fire-water elemental conflict. Always place money plant in north or north-east direction and ensure it grows upward rather than trailing downward.

Is cactus bad for home as per Vastu?

Cactus and all thorny plants are considered inauspicious indoors in Vastu because thorns represent cutting energy that disrupts prana flow. Keep cactus and thorny plants in the garden’s south or west zone. They are not prohibited outdoors — only indoors in the home’s primary zones.

Which plant is best for north-east corner of home?

Tulsi is the most auspicious plant for the north-east corner. If tulsi cannot be maintained (insufficient sunlight), an alternative is a small crystal cluster or a copper vessel with water in the north-east corner instead.

Can I keep bamboo plant in bedroom as per Vastu?

It is generally not recommended to keep large plants in the bedroom in Vastu. If you wish to keep a small lucky bamboo, place it near the east or north window of the bedroom, not next to the bed itself.

Should I keep a tulsi plant inside the flat?

Yes, in the north-east corner of the flat or on the east balcony. Tulsi needs direct sunlight to thrive — ensure the placement has access to morning sun. If your flat does not receive direct morning sun in the north-east area, the east-facing balcony is the next best option.
