The 2BHK and 3BHK flat is where most urban Indian families live. It is also where most Vastu consultations happen — because the constraints of apartment living (fixed layouts, shared walls, plumbing stacks in fixed positions) make it harder to get every zone right, and easier to end up with a layout that needs correction.
Over three thousand consultations, I have seen the same room-placement patterns repeated across Bangalore’s apartment complexes: the same promising zones, the same recurring defects, and the same corrections that work without breaking a single wall. This guide maps the key Vastu zones for 2BHK and 3BHK flats room by room, so you know what to look for — and what to fix.
How to Apply This Guide
Before reading room-by-room, establish two things: (1) the flat’s facing direction, and (2) a 3×3 directional grid of nine zones overlaid on the floor plan. Each room’s Vastu quality depends on which zone it occupies.
The Main Entrance
Best zones: North, North-East, East, South-East (for east-facing), or the favourable pada of whichever wall faces the street.
The entrance is the primary point through which energy enters the home. Its placement within the wall — not just the wall’s direction — determines whether that energy is beneficial or disruptive. Each wall is divided into nine equal segments (padas), and different padas carry different energy qualities. A degree-accurate compass reading mapped against the pada grid confirms whether your entrance is in a favourable position.
The Living Room
Best zones: North, North-East, East, or North-West.
The living room is ideally placed in the lighter, more open zones of the flat. A living room in the North-East is considered particularly auspicious. Heavy furniture (bookshelves, entertainment units) belongs on the South or West walls. The sofa set should face North or East.
The Master Bedroom
Best zone: South-West — this is non-negotiable in classical Vastu.
The South-West is the zone of the earth element: stable, grounding, and associated with the head of the household. For 2BHK flats, confirm which of the two bedrooms occupies the South-West corner before deciding which becomes the master. For 3BHK flats, the South-West bedroom should always be the master; the second typically works well in the North-West, and the third in the North or East.
Sleeping direction: Head pointing South or East. Never North.
The Children’s Bedroom
Best zones: West, North-West, or North.
The West zone is associated with discipline and focused learning — qualities that support academic performance. The study desk inside the children’s room should face North or East, and the child’s head should point East or South while sleeping.
The Kitchen
Best zones: South-East (primary), North-West (secondary).
The South-East is the Agni (fire) corner in Vastu — the natural home of the kitchen. Critical zones to avoid: North-East (fire-water elemental conflict, the most serious kitchen defect) and South-West (ideally reserved for the master bedroom). The cook should ideally face East while cooking.
The Pooja Room
Best zone: North-East.
The North-East is associated with divine energy, clarity, and spiritual receptivity. If a dedicated pooja room is not available (common in compact 2BHK flats), a pooja corner in the North-East of the living room serves the same purpose. Idols should face West (worshipper faces East) or face East (worshipper faces West). Never south.
The Bathrooms and Toilets
Acceptable zones: West, North-West, South (not South-West).
Strictly avoid: North-East (most serious defect), South-West, and the centre of the flat (Brahmasthana). Many apartment builders place toilets in the North-East for plumbing convenience — if your flat has this, expert non-demolition corrections are available but require immediate attention.
The Study or Home Office
Best zones: North, North-East, or West.
North is associated with intellectual energy, communication, and financial flow in Vastu — particularly favourable for careers in communication, finance, or knowledge work. Always face North or East while working, regardless of the room’s position.

What If Your Flat Doesn’t Match This Ideal?
Most flats don’t. Apartment layouts are designed by architects working with space efficiency, not Vastu principles. Some zone placements will be non-ideal in almost every flat — this is where non-demolition Vastu corrections become essential.
Without breaking walls or relocating plumbing, a qualified Vastu consultant can correct elemental imbalances through specific material placements, colour therapy, and spatial adjustments. The goal is not a perfect Vastu flat (those are rare) — it is a flat where the major zones are correctly occupied, the significant defects are mitigated, and the residents can live with confidence.
