Water is one of the five elements (Pancha Bhuta) in Vastu Shastra and one of the most potent elemental forces in a property. The placement of underground borewells, overhead water tanks, swimming pools, and water features determines the quality of water-element energy throughout the home. Incorrect water placement is one of the most consistently observable causes of financial difficulty and health problems in Vastu-assessed properties.

Best Direction for Borewell: North-East

The north-east zone (Ishanya) is associated with the water element in Vastu’s directional schema. A borewell in the north-east corner of a plot is the ideal placement — it draws water from beneath the earth in perfect elemental alignment with the zone’s water energy. This amplifies the positive north-east energy (financial flow, health, divine prana) while fulfilling the water requirement of the property.

The north and east zones are secondary auspicious zones for boreholes and underground water storage. Both carry light, open energy compatible with the water element. A borewell in the north or east zone is less powerful than north-east but still produces positive financial and health effects.

Vastu for Overhead Water Tank

Best Direction: South, South-West, or West

Overhead water tanks are heavy, elevated structures. In Vastu, heavy elevated structures belong in the southern and western zones of the property — the zones that carry heavier, more stable elemental energy. A water tank in the south or south-west is the ideal placement: the weight reinforces the earth element of the south-west, and the height of the tank in the south zone is compatible with the fire zone’s upward energy quality.

Worst Direction for Overhead Tank: North-East

An overhead water tank in the north-east is one of the most damaging water-related Vastu defects. The problem here is the combination of water element (correct for NE) with heavy elevated weight (extremely wrong for NE). The north-east should be the lightest zone in the property. Adding a heavy tank above the sacred north-east corner suppresses and crushes the NE energy with structural weight AND introduces water-element excess in an already water-heavy zone. A swimming pool is the largest water body on a residential property and carries the water element at maximum intensity. Correct placement:

• North: A swimming pool in the north zone of a garden amplifies financial flow energy strongly. This is the most commonly recommended pool placement in classical Vastu for large properties.
• North-East: Excellent for spiritual and health energy if the pool is kept clean and maintained. A neglected or dirty pool in the north-east is extremely inauspicious.
• East: Good. Supports health and social energy.
• South-West: Avoid. Water in the south-west creates the same elemental conflict as a south-west borewell, with amplified effect due to the pool’s scale.

Water Features and Fountains in Vastu

Water features (indoor fountains, aquariums, water walls) follow the same directional rules as major water placements:
